Understanding Drinking Water Sources in Ontario

If you’re buying or selling rural property in Ontario, one of the most important considerations is where your drinking water comes from. Unlike urban homes connected to municipal systems, many rural and waterfront properties rely on private water sources. Here are the most common ones:

Drilled Wells – Typically 100+ feet deep, drilled wells are the most common and often preferred. They access water from deep underground aquifers. However, “deeper” does not always mean “better.” For example, some drilled wells produce water with high iron content, which can stain fixtures and affect taste.

Dug Wells – These are wide, shallow wells (less than 50 feet deep) that collect groundwater closer to the surface. They can provide good volume but are more vulnerable to contamination from surface runoff.

Sandpoint Wells – Also called “driven point wells,” these are narrow pipes driven into sandy soil. They’re more affordable but only work in certain soil types and tend to have limited water supply.

Surface Water (Lake or River) – Some properties draw directly from nearby lakes or rivers. While convenient, surface water sources are exposed to environmental contaminants and always require treatment.

Key takeaway: While most people prefer drilled wells, that does not guarantee good water quality. Every source—whether a drilled well, dug well, sandpoint, or lake—comes with its own risks. Regular testing is essential to ensure safe drinking water.

In my next post, I’ll cover water filtration systems and how they can address common issues like iron, hardness, bacteria, and more.
